Every year, many people in Ireland are affected by airborne contaminants they have breathed in at work. If your work produces dust of any kind (e.g. flour dust in bakeries), mist (e.g. paint mist from spraying), fume (e.g. from welding), gas (e.g. carbon monoxide from furnaces) or vapour (e.g. solvents from painting), there may be a risk to the health of your employees.
A Local exhaust ventilation system (LEV) should remove any harmful dust, mist, fumes or gas in the air from the workplace
To adequately protect your health:
- It needs to be the right design for the application
- It needs to be installed correctly in the first place
- It needs regular checking and maintenance
In order to comply with COSSH regulations all LEV systems need to be tested and certified at least every 14 months, ideally once a year
